|It's guilty pleasure time. Michael Douglas stars as Dr. Nathan Conrad, a successful New York psychiatrist getting ready for a peaceful Thanksgiving with his wife (Famke Janssen) and small daughter. But Dr. Conrad's family is about to be jeopardized by bad men. The criminals want to find out a secret buried deep within the mind of a catatonic teenager locked up in a local asylum. So they kidnap the doctor's daughter to pressure him into finding a quick cure for the demented young woman, played by ingenue Brittany Murphy ("Girl, Interrupted"). The gang is led by a cold-hearted bastard (Sean Bean of "Goldeneye") who doesn't mind killing an innocent and gives Dr. Conrad a deadly deadline to get the info. Meanwhile, the cops, represented by a resolute detective (Jennifer Esposito), are after the miscreants for a pair of murders. She may be too late to save the day. It's a formula, but the whole shebang works as thriller, mystery and slasher film. And Murphy is a rough-cut jewel as the nutcase.|
