Thora Birch, memorable as the sullen, disaffected suburban daughter in "American Beauty," is even better as malcontent teen Enid — the main protagonist in the poignant, funny movie adaptation of artist/writer Daniel Clowes' "Ghost World" comic. The relationship between Enid and her best friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) is built on their hipper-than-thou attitude toward the rest of the world. They think of themselves as outsiders who don't fit the conventional mold, but they're not beyond pulling a cruel prank on fellow misfit Seymour (nerd-perfect Steve Buscemi), a lonely, middle-aged collector of 78-rpm records. Director Terry Zwigoff ("Crumb") co-wrote the script with Clowes, and the narrative structure they devised gives dramatic weight to Enid's growing connection with Seymour, who is just a peripheral character in the comic. Set during the summer after the girls graduate from high school, the film is a crafty contemplation of comrades-in-cool growing up and apart.
