A weird marriage of wholesome, earnest hero and sick-and-twisted humor, this deranged sideshow is shameless in its pursuit of laughter, but it occasionally strikes paydirt. Jimmy Livingston (Jake Gyllenhaal) was born with a faulty immune system, so he's being forced to live his repressive suburban life in a plastic bubble. He's also coddled by his manipulative, religion-spouting mama (Swoosie Kurtz). No wonder that the frustrated teenage Jimmy falls hard for dreamy blonde-next-door Chloe (Marley Shelton). Despite his inability to leave his bubble bedroom and touch his beloved, Jimmy decides to construct a mobile and merrily clumsy bubble suit that will let him follow her cross-country to Niagara Falls, where she's due to marry an intimidating jerk. On his way to declare his love to Chloe, Jimmy encounters the usual assortment of freaks, including bikers, cult members and real freaks under the aegis of a tiny tyrant (Verne Troyer, A.K.A. Mini-Me from the "Austin Powers" films). | |||
