The zenith of cult movies is director W.D. Richter's hilarious, action-packed appropriation and update of the Doc Savage-style '30s pulp hero. Now that it's out on DVD, its reputation should be enhanced. The film's most enticing conceit is its suggestion that everyone who sees it is completely familiar with the distinguished career of scientist, surgeon and rock star Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller of "Robocop") - the son of genius parents who were killed by sabotage when they were on the verge of crossing into the eighth dimension. Assisted by his preternaturally talented aides/band members, the Hong Kong Cavaliers (one is played by rangy Jeff Goldblum), Buckaroo has made the dimensional leap in his amazing jet car. But the insane Dr. Emilio Lizardo (a scenery-consuming John Lithgow) and some alien visitors have plans that may lead to Earth's total destruction unless Buckaroo saves the day. Weird, wild, wonderful. With Ellen Barkin as damsel-in-distress Penny Priddy.
