Perhaps good guys were easier to spot and sides were easier to take in John Singleton's debut film, "Boyz N the Hood" — the landmark ghetto drama that endorsed the path of righteousness for young African-American males confronting gang culture. The director's latest — an ambitious, flawed look at the daily trials of a wayward man-child in the South Central L.A. 'hood — is more problematic. Singer Tyrese Gibson holds his own in the lead role of 20-year-old Jody. Whether unemployed or hustling stolen clothing, Jody lives at home in relative comfort with his mama, even though he's fathered a son by his number-one girlfriend and a daughter by another lover. But his mother's boyfriend, reformed ex-con Melvin (Ving Rhames), moves into the house and a nemesis (rapper Snoop Dogg) gets out of jail, disturbing Jody's routine of easy sex, gettin' high and laying about. Numerous well-acted, well-blocked scenes and a message of responsibility trump heavy-handed moments and a pat resolution.
