Jeremiah Stansbury is a painter from a seaside town
in New Jersey. He currently resides in Memphis, Tennessee.
Originality is an important aspect of his artistic journey.
All of his paintings stem from a kind of internal prompting
or reaction to specific real world events. His "style"
is simply the rate at which his imagination makes sense
of those events that touch his life.
Meaning is central to this notion of translation as
is seeing; in this context "to see" means
to understand how the rise of one external event is
prompted by the end of another seemingly separate event.
Events or happenings in the world prompt response only
in so far as there is meaning. It is a fact that ones
response to an external event is what gives that event
a "meaning" and shape. "Response"
here is defined as making an internal decision that
manifests itself in a real or physical way.
Stansbury believes that an artist's style develops through
a close investigation into the way he/she gives meaning
to the external world. In Jeremiah's words, "Artists
can only give meaning to their individual life in the
same proportion in which they imbue meaning into the
subject of their artwork."
Jeremiah studied painting in New York under Brooke Larsen
at the School of Visual Arts. He graduated with a BA
from the University of Memphis and has had several shows
in the Memphis area at D'Edge Art, Midtown Artist Market,
and Painted Planet. His work is currently on view at
Painted Planet in Memphis.
